SAVE THE HISTORIC

CITY HALL!

July 1996, Issue No. 2

Julie Machado, Editor

WORK CONTINUES

Friends of Historic City Hall (FHCH) met again on July 13, 1997.  FHCH is dedicated to saving Hayward=s Historic City Hall on Mission Blvd. from destruction.  The City of Hayward plans to tear down the building by the end of the year, and to remove the facade and attach it to the back of the Veteran=s Hall.

TASKS

Much of the latest meeting centered on establishing a timeline for accomplishing the many tasks required to save Hayward's Historic City Hall.  Tasks include: determine community support; obtain publicity; identify sources of work volunteers; identify sources of funds; fundraising; research legal issues; research historical issues; obtain engineer/architect report; develop long-range plan.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Participants reported numerous accomplishments during the previous month.  Publicity was received in the Daily Review, the Demo's newsletter, and the Eden Gardens neighborhood newsletter.  Dozens of petitions soliciting community support have been distributed and are being returned full of signatures. A pre-application letter was submitted requesting a grant of up to $450,000.00 from the California Heritage Fund.  And this newsletter has been established to keep you informed and to ask for your help.

HISTORIC STATUS

Research revealed that Hayward's Historic City Hall building itself is not yet listed as a State or Federal Historic Landmark.  It does have local historic designation, is listed on both the Alameda County Historical Resources Inventory of 1974, and the Hayward Historical Resources Inventory of 1976, and is located in the Marks Historical District.  The committee determined that obtaining State and/or Federal Historical status for the building is one of our first priorities.

COSTS

And since there are costs associated with these applications, another priority is to raise funds.  Initially, we need to cover mainly mailing costs (right now, about $20 per mailing), but we will have to raise more money as time passes.  Although a lot of labor and professional skill is being donated right now, application fees can cost hundreds of dollars, and the engineer/architect report that we need may cost between $15,000 and $30,000.00.  We hope to raise even larger amounts through grants and corporate donations, to maintain and/or rehabilitate the building.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

1. Please write letters to the Editor of the local newspapers (Daily Review, PO Box 5050, Hayward CA 94544) and write or call the Hayward City Council (25151 Clawiter Road, Hayward CA 94545, 293-5000+0) expressing your support of preserving our historical resources, including the Historical City Hall.

2. Continue to circulate petitions for signatures of support.  Petitions can be obtained from (and should be returned to) Julie Machado at 22248 Main Street, Hayward, 581-7850.

3. If you know an organization (homeowner's association, social club, political group, etc.) that might be interested in supporting this effort by circulating petitions or submitting a letter of support, please contact Julie or Frank.

4. Tim Tivoli Steele is spearheading efforts in the architecture/ engineering/building code arena.  Anyone with background or contacts in these areas is encouraged to call him at (510) 633-1573.

5. A number of fundraisers have been suggested, including a silent auction, an ice cream social, a walking tour, a 1930's music party.  If you would like to help plan/implement any of these (or your own idea), or if you know of any grant resources or companies that might be interested in investing in Hayward's heritage, please call Julie Machado at (510) 581-7850.

6.  Attend the next meeting on Saturday August 17 at 10am at the Historic Linekin Building, 22248 Main Street, Hayward (between A Street and Hazel).

7.  Other things: We could use donations of stamps, envelopes, and answering machine, a computer.  We would also like to find a supporter who can set up and make mailing labels, do Internet research/set up a web page (what else is there?), and/or people who will help research and/or write grants.

8.  Contact any of the following persons with your ideas: Lore Warren 783-2072; Frank Goulart 581-9666; Julie Machado 581-7850; Tim Steele 633-1573; Kevin Dowling 264-0340; or Linda Bennett 881-5805.
